Virginia Substance Use Prevention Block Grant Annual Report
The 2023–2024 Virginia Substance Use Prevention Block Grant Annual Report highlights significant progress in reducing substance use and promoting mental health across the state. Implemented by 40 Community Services Boards (CSBs), the initiative achieved notable reductions in youth alcohol and cigarette use while expanding efforts to address emerging issues like cannabis and problem gambling.
Key prevention strategies included over 12,000 individuals trained in mental health and suicide prevention, widespread distribution of safety devices through Lock and Talk programs, and innovative media campaigns, which doubled engagement in cannabis prevention efforts compared to the previous year.
Despite these successes, challenges such as limited staffing, funding constraints, and cultural barriers continue to impact the effectiveness of prevention efforts. To address these obstacles, the report emphasizes the need for sustained collaboration, strategic planning, and capacity-building among CSBs. Looking ahead, the initiative aims to refine its focus for the 2025–2030 funding cycle, ensuring long-term sustainability and further progress in building healthier, safer communities across Virginia.
